Vitamin D3 helps regulate calcium and phosphorus absorption from the intestine and is essential for the assimilation of calcium and phosphorus in poultry. Vitamin D3 also increases the uptake and deposition of minerals in bone and helps to ensure normal development of the embryonic skeleton. For poultry, Vitamin D3 can play a critical role in bone and joint formation by promoting normal calcification. To make it available to the bird, Vitamin D3 must first be converted in the liver to 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 . The conversion of vitamin D3 to 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 can be limited due to factors such as stress, disease, and mycotoxins. The benefits attributed to 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 (HY-D) are because it bypasses this conversion step in the liver.
